Welcome to the art & design work of Terry O. Luc.

Artist’s Statement

Through bold imagery and color, I create art that commands attention. I want my art to make a presence in the room. I create paintings that cannot be ignored but instead demand attention from the viewer. I am greatly influenced by pop culture, especially of the years of my parents’ generation and my years growing up.

My environment growing up impacted me so much as a young child - impressions of Chicago, of old movies, of the beautiful actresses, of the changing culture of the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s – they were magic to me. Many times I use those images as the starting point for my work, maybe the face of an actress from yesteryear who looks out at the viewer as one who refuses to be forgotten. Sometimes my paintings look like pulp fiction book covers for words that were never written. The random mix of imagery invites the viewer to draw his or her own meanings.

I am also fascinated by political figures and timeless cultural icons whose very image will draw an emotional response from the viewer. I try to heighten that response through intense color and in my style of painting. Many times my subjects will challenge the viewer as they stare out from the canvas.

My paintings are rarely subtle in tone or drawing style. My brush strokes are bold and decisive. My palette is limited to mainly the primary and secondary colors.  Color relationships are an important tool to heighten the emotional aspects of my paintings.  I love to use complementary colors together toward that goal.

Ed Paschke has been my strongest influence as a teacher and with his bold imagery and color. The great illustrators have also influenced my work, especially pin-up artist Gil Elvgren and fantasy artist Frank Frazetta. Other artists who I greatly admire include John W. Waterhouse, John Singer Sargent and Paul Gauguin.
